The Hill is a neighborhood within St. Louis, Missouri, located on high ground south of Forest Park. The Hill began with immigrants from Northern Italy resulting in an Italian American majority population during the early part of the 20th century. Its name is due to its proximity to the highest point of the city, formerly named St. Louis Hill.
The Hill’s roots are interspersed with the history of St. Louis, and famous for world class athletes and Italian cuisine. Everything is colorful here – even the fire hydrants are painted red, white and green. today it maintains a traditional collection of authentic Italian bakeries, grocery stores, restaurants and mom-and-pop trattorias.
The Gateway Arch is a 630-foot monument in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, that sits along the west bank of the Mississippi River. The Gateway Arch, one of the most iconic monuments in the U.S., takes its name from the city’s role as the “Gateway to the West” during the westward expansion of the United States in the 19th century.
The arch was designed by Finnish-born American architect Eero Saarinen in 1948 and was constructed between 1963 and 1965. Inside are two trams, each of which consists of eight cars that each carry up to five seated people at a time. Visitors can take a four-minute tram ride to the viewing platform at the top of the arch.
